Welcome to the Village of Matawatchan located in the Madawaska Highlands in southern Renfrew County bordering on the counties of Frontenac and Lennox & Addington. Matawatchan is part of a close knit community which includes the people of several small villages, such as Griffith, Denbigh, Slate Falls, Vennachar, Dacre, Black Donald, Camel Chute, Calabogie, Cloyne, Plevna and many more.
This is cottage country where the population quadruples in the summer. Fantastic views of the rugged forested hills and clear lakes and streams attract nature lovers, sportspeople and vacationers, inspiring artists and songwriters alike. The Madawaska River, known for it’s fantastic whitewater rapids, is central to our history and culture.
The Madawaska Highlands area is semi-remote, dotted with B&B’s, campgrounds, hunt camps, vacation cabins, general stores, specialty shops, farmers markets, community halls and a thriving arts community. We have it all right here! If you are homesick for the water, watch videos of your shoreline here... www.ecottagefilms.com
For a small village, a lot happens here.

ALL REGULAR EVENTS ARE ON HOLD DURING THE COVID CRISIS. ALL BEACHES ARE CLOSED.
There is a Front line workers appreciation parade planned for this Wednesday May 27 starting at 12:30 starting at the Pine Valley Restaurant in Griffith. Anyone can join in. Decorated cars are nice but optional. The procession will go from the Pine Valley, through Matawatchan, to the Vennachar waste transfer station, then on to Denbigh. Please join us if you can. This is being organized by the Denbigh-Griffith Lions Club.
The Matawatchan Hall Outdoor Walking Club is still going strong and meets each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at the Matawatchan Hall parking lot at 9am. Walks are generally an hour long and walkers go at their own pace. Walkers are keeping their two meter distance while still engaging in welcome and much needed social interaction. New people welcome if they have been through 14 days of self-isolation with no visits to local stores, etc. Bring your well-behaved dog on a leash.
Why take a risky trip to the city when we have all your necessities and more right here? Download this list here.
The people of Griffith, Matawatchan, Vennachar, and Denbigh would like to support and thank the local business owners who are staying open so that we can all avoid trips to larger centers. Keep your distance, wash your hands and don’t leave home if you have symptoms. Ask about delivery in all cases.
